There is no mention on this site of Lyman Beecher's notorious nativist/Know-Nothing views. His "A Plea for the West" is available at Amazon. His role in inciting the August 10-11, 1834 riots in Charlestown (now Somerville) MA are well known. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center states that he "...guided the community with his powerful sermons and taught his children to be involved in the issues of the day." is a little absurd, don't you think? If seeing the sufferings, and hatred, directed towards slaves in Cincinnati provoked Harriet to moral outrage it is odd that the working conditions and hatred of German immigrants didn't arouse any concern at all. Racial bigotry a no-no, religious acceptable?

Please send more information and registration details!

My address is 1183 Washington Street, Bath, ME 04530

I have recently retired as Director of Research & Education at Andover Historical Society, where I developed programs, tours, and published articles and presented community plays about Harriet's Andover years

I am currently working on a play about Harriet and Calvin's marriage and friendship and their role as
abolitionists.

I hope I will be able to attend the conference June 23
